Stereo Mastering Quote
Stero mastering is a traditional 2-track mix that is processed through a single audio path - into a stereo mastering system. Mastering serves as a 'glue' to your mix by making overall changes. The main goal of mastering is to match the overall loudness and frequency balance (bass, treble and mid range) to A) your favorite professional (or amateur!) recordings and B) the other songs on your album, EP, etc. Stereo mastering services include sequencing, the addition of your supplied ISRC codes and CD-Text and a finished DDP file and physical master copy.
Stem Mastering Quote
Stem mastering is when 2 or more (up to 8) separated portions of your mix (example: drums, bass, instruments, vocals) are processed separately for ultimate control of processing. Stem mastering provides the engineer with much more flexibility allowing them to substantially improve every aspect of a mix. The better you like your stereo mix, the fewer Separations you'll need. Four or five is ideal. The more concerns you have about your mix, the greater number of Separations you'll need. To learn more about separating your mixes, click here.

Mix and Master Quote
From internet forums to music magazines, the term "mastering" is one of somewhat mythical proportions–the final step to end all of your problems and to give you that "BIG, major-label sound". Mastering is important and it is the final step, but any respectable mastering engineer will tell you that mastering is not a substitute for a good mix. The most important thing to understand is this: a mix engineer applies effects and level changes to each individual instrument separately. A mastering engineer can only apply effects to everything in a mix at the same time. Click here to learn more about the difference between mixing and mastering.
